Legacy Mentoring
A caring adult for every child
|
A legacy is a special gift that makes a difference for the youth of Anderson County. Not all young people have caring adults as part of their world. The Legacy Mentoring Program changes that, linking adults to youth who need encouragement and motivation to be successful in life. It is a collaborative effort of local churches/faith communities, and Anderson School District Five. Caring community members who want to make a difference in the life of a young person may become a mentor by calling Carol Vickery, Community Involvement Coordinator at 260-5057. Your legacy is their inheritance and a gift to the future. It can be the most important thing you ever do. And what better legacy than that? We ask that our mentors spend a minimum of one hour per week with their student. Most mentors meet with their student at the school and help them academically, eat lunch, or just talk. Currently we have over 160 students mentored by adults from our community. Big Brothers Big Sister of America has found that students that are mentored are:
We have trained nearly 600 mentors and work to see that they are placed with a child with similar likes and definite needs. We hold training sessions on an as needed basis and will go to churches or organizations to train if requested. We have an annual celebration each year. Our goal is to make the children feel special and we do so with food, door prizes, and entertainment. All mentors, mentees, and mentee parents are invited. All of our schools have a great need for mentors. If you would like to be a mentor or are involved with an organization or church that would be interested in mentoring, please contact: Carol Vickery - 260-5057 for more information.
