Orchestra 1-10 (1 unit each)Students who are currently in orchestra as a rising freshman or higher may audition for SAA High School Sinfonia Orchestra. The audition consists of the material used for region orchestra auditions in the fall. Students already in Sinfonia at SAA do not need to audition. All other non-auditioned students will be placed in their grade-level orchestra. PDF versions of the auditions are linked above.
Prerequisites: Previous study and teacher recommendation for Levels 1 and 2. Audition OR teacher recommendation for Levels 3 and above.
This course is a performance class, stressing instrumental technique and ensemble experience. Students will learn aspects of music theory and history. State orchestra events such as regions, all state, solo and ensemble festivals, and concert festivals are held each year. In order to participate in these events, students must be enrolled in the class. Students who are receiving credit for orchestra can also be involved in other auditioned performing groups such as Carolina Youth Symphony or Anderson Symphony Orchestra.
Students in this course will be grouped by ability level based on audition results each spring. Honors credit is available for levels 3 and above. To receive honors credit students are required to complete an honors contract. Honors credit courses require students to complete an advanced curriculum with rigorous coursework that increases the level of student performance in the arts area.
Piano Beginner (1 unit)
This course is a study of basic piano techniques. No previous musical training is required. Students will learn to read notes and rhythms so they can perform increasingly difficult pieces of piano music.
Piano Intermediate / Advanced (1 unit each)
Prerequisites: Previous level Piano course OR audition: a prepared piece of the student's choice.
These courses are a study of intermediate and advanced piano techniques. Students will expand their understanding of music theory to facilitate playing advanced repertoire. Students will prepare and perform an assigned piece of music as well as sight-read for the audition. Honors credit is available for levels 3 and above. To receive honors credit students are required to complete an honors contract. Honors credit courses require students to complete an advanced curriculum with rigorous coursework that increases the level of student performance in the arts area.
