Today the fifth grade students experienced a simulation of what immigrants experienced as they traveled across the Atlantic Ocean and then through Ellis Island. Students created passports with their new immigrant names and countries of origin which they carried in envelopes that held all their valuable documents needed to enter into America.

Then they packed their things into a pillowcase, took their passports and loaded on to a very crowded boat. After a very long journey, they sailed into New York Harbor. The first thing they saw was the Statue of Liberty welcoming them to America! Once at Ellis Island, students experienced long lines, separation from family or friends, evaluations, interviews, questions from officials, and finally deportation or admittance into America.
