Teachers at Midway begin with building relationships with students. Teachers create a balanced routine where these students can discover their strengths and weaknesses, feel comfortable talking about them, and then having them learn to do something to improve their literacy. Teachers set up consistent routines for students to explore language, words, texts, media, and all kinds of ideas. Students are encouraged to ask questions, be curious, work hard, and articulate their findings and their thinking. Inquiry, investigations, curiosity, and research are an integral part of our plans. Teachers merge the required curriculum into the inquiry units to ignite excitement and interest. Authentic work and inspirational assignments are created to assess student learning while encouraging them to do their best work to publish to others. I believe building this motivation is the key to the successful teaching at Midway.
