The SAVE Act - Epi-Pen
Dear Parent /Legal Guardian:
Under the Safe Access to Vital Epinephrine (SAVE) Act, approved by the South Carolina Legislature, Anderson School District Five will maintain a stock supply of epinephrine (Epi-Pen) auto-injectors for students or other individuals with/ without a prescription in each school.
The SAVE Act allows school nurses and other designated school personnel to use an Epi-Pen on any student or individual on school premises whom they believe in good faith is experiencing anaphylaxis.
The Epi-Pen is an auto-injector prefilled with epinephrine; the drug of choice for emergency treatment for severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) to insect stings or bites, foods, drugs, and other allergens. School nurses and designated school personnel are/will be trained on the proper Epi-Pen administration technique.
For safety reasons, if an Epi-Pen is administered at school, 911 will be called.
Allergic symptoms may include:
- difficulty in breathing, wheezing ; hives; flushing ; itching ; redness of skin; swelling of throat, lips, tongue, ; tightness/change of voice; difficulty swallowing; agitation
Suppose your child has been diagnosed with an allergy that requires the use of an Epi-Pen. In that case, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to provide an Epi-Pen to the school nurse on or before the first day of class, along with medical orders. Additionally, you must pick up your child’s Epi-Pen at the end of the school year.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
