BOARD OF TRUSTEES SPECIAL MEETING

ANDERSON SCHOOL DISTRICT NUMBER FIVE

Anderson, South Carolina

 

March 24, 2011

6:30 P.M.

 

 

The Board of Trustees of Anderson County School District Number Five met in the Offices of the Board this date with the following members present:  Mr. Rick Bradshaw, Mrs. Ann W. Huitt, Mrs. Margaret Mack, Mr. Al Norris, Mr. Dickie Smith, Dr. Paul A. Talmadge and Mr. Paul Zugg.  Absent were Mr. David Alewine and Mr. Charles Lee Anderson.

 

 

NOTICE TO MEDIA

 

In accordance with the S. C. Code of Laws, 1976, Section 30-4-80(d), as amended, the following have been notified of the time, date, place and agenda of this meeting:  The Anderson Independent-Mail, Greenville News, The Anderson Journal, WYFF, WSPA, Paul Brown, and FOX 21.

 

 

CALL TO ORDER

 

Mr. Norris called the meeting to order at 6:34 p.m. for the purpose of receiving information with regard to the district’s graduation rate, 9th grade academies, and the charter school application.

 

 

GRADUATION RATE

 

In a PowerPoint presentation, assistant principals Katie Brown and Sherry Martin discussed what makes up a graduation cohort, documentation received from the State Department of Education, categories that determine the graduate rate, etc.  (See attached presentation)

 

 

NINTH GRADE ACADEMIES

 

In a PowerPoint presentation, Mrs. Brown discussed the philosophy of a Ninth Grade Academy and why we need an academy.  Ms. Brown then recognized Westside Ninth Grade Academy Director Shaunda Tenry to continue with the presentation.

 

Mrs. Tenry discussed discipline, “Get Wise” program for students who failed a core eighth grade class, map and reading strategies for students below grade level, essentials class for mid-year failures, college exposure, success results, student achievement, and AVID implementation.  (See attached presentation)

 

In a PowerPoint presentation, T. L. Hanna Ninth Grade Academy Director Mary Nell Anthony discussed what the academy offers, AVID implementation, “Power Hour” school-wide tutoring program, success results, discipline, and student achievement.  (See attached presentation)

 

 

 

 

 

 

CHARTER SCHOOL APPLICATION

 

Mrs. Bagley recognized Dr. Wilson to present the Charter School Proposal.  She stated that after the presentation the Administration will request Board approval to proceed with completing the application to develop a district sponsored charter school.

 

In a PowerPoint presentation, Dr. Wilson discussed why a charter school, the target student population, the two programs offered (i.e., High School Diploma, GED), the profile of the successful charter school student, the proposed opening date, the timeline for the application process, the charter school board, and the safe guards.  (See attached presentation)

 

Dr. Talmadge made a motion the Board approve the Administration’s recommendation to proceed with the application process to develop a district sponsored charter school as presented.  Mrs. Huitt seconded the motion.  The motion carried with six in favor and one opposed (Bradshaw).

 

Finally, Mrs. Bagley shared the 2010 Absolute Ratings by Poverty Index for Anderson School District Five compared to other districts in the state.

 

 

ADJOURNMENT

 

There being no further business, Mr. Zugg made a motion the Board adjourn.  Mr. Norris seconded the motion, which carried unanimously.
