As Concord's Reading Coach and PYP Coordinator, it is my goal to support teachers' efforts in focusing on the total growth of the child. This focus encompasses the social, physical, emotional, and cultural needs in addition to academic needs.
Concord Elementary School is an authorized International Baccalaureate School. As an IB school, our goal is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
Concord uses the South Carolina State Standards in conjunction with the IB Primary Years Programme approach to organize and teach the curriculum through carefully planned units of instruction. Our teachers have developed challenging units of inquiry as the vehicle for learning. Six transdisciplinary themes provide the framework for the exploration of knowledge. These themes include:Who we are
Where we are in time and placeHow we express ourselvesHow the world works
How we organize ourselves
Sharing the planet
A structured inquiry approach to learning is the basis of the program. Students are encouraged to formulate and ask meaningful questions. Teams of teachers, including special area teachers, have developed these Units of Inquiry that provide significant, relevant, and challenging learning experiences across the curriculum.
In keeping with the international focus of PYP, students are required to learn a language other than the language used for instruction in the school they attend. Students in Grades Kindergarten - 5 receive Spanish instruction which includes exploring the culture as well as the language.
