First, let me start by saying welcome back!  I hope you all have had a restful and relaxing summer break and are as excited as I am to start the 2016-2017 school year.  I firmly believe that the 9th grade year is the most important year of your child's high school career as it lays the foundation and sets precedent for their future here at Westside.  It is my goal to help make the middle/high school transition as seamless as possible by giving your child all the tools and resources necessary for them to be successful.  They will be surrounded by teachers and administrators who truly care about their success on a daily basis, and who are willing to go above and beyond to make sure they achieve both academic and personal success.  I can say with extreme confidence that your child will have the best teachers in the state and they will maintain high expectations and hold your child accountable for their education.  Statistics show that if a student fails their 9th grade year, then the probability of them dropping out of high school is significantly increased.  This is why the faculty and staff here at Westside work tirelessly to make sure that your child does not become a statistic.  Besides the everyday high-quality instruction they will receive, there will be many other opportunities for them to achieve academic success.  Not only are teachers willing to stay after school to help students who need extra assistance, they also take time to build positive relationships with their students and act as mentors as well.   We hold power hour both in the morning and afternoon 4 days a week, and there will be special programs after school for students who need extra assistance in both English and Math.  I firmly believe that education is the key to success later in life.  It is imperative that the student becomes responsible for getting their education.  In order to achieve this success they need to have clear and attainable goals.  Once they have their goals set, they need to hold themselves accountable by making sure they are on time and prepared for every class, follow all school and classroom rules, and worry about what they are doing and not what everyone else is doing.  This, along with a positive attitude and maximum effort day in and day out will ensure that they will accomplish their goals.

Just as the academic component of high school is important to your child being successful, I truly believe  that the social component is just as important to their success.  GET INVOLVED!  Here at Westside there are many opportunities to be a part of something.  We have numerous clubs, organizations, and a top notch athletic department.  In short, there is something for everyone.  This is a great way for your child to meet new people, make new friends, and give them a well-rounded high school experience.  In closing, I hope you can see that I am very passionate about the well being of your child and their success as a 9th grader here at Westside.  Thank you for giving us the opportunity to educate your child.  If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I am looking forward to a great 2016-2017 school year, and I look forward to seeing your child walk across the stage in 2020.
