Important Update (9/18/2020): As of September 11, 2020, all final approvals for enrollment into the Anderson Five Virtual Academy (A5VA) were communicated to families, and all waiting lists to enroll in the A5VA CLOSED.  From this point forward, any parent/guardian still wanting to contact someone about their child's A5VA status must call, email, or make an appointment with the Anderson Five Virtual Academy. All enrollment decisions into the A5VA will be made by the A5VA.

Additionally as of September 11, 2020, all requests to withdraw from Anderson Five Virtual Academy and enroll back into a brick-and-mortar school are no longer being accepted. Any parent or guardian wanting to withdraw their child from the Anderson Five Virtual Academy and enroll back into a brick-and-mortar school should contact the Office of Student Services at the District Office.

Families completely NEW to Anderson School District Five will have the option of face-to-face instruction OR Anderson Five Virtual Academy instruction.

All inquiries and requests in these regards should be redirected, respectively:

  • Anderson Five District Office: (864) 260-5000
  • C.F. Reames Education Center: (864) 260-5160

Important Update (8/26/2020)Anderson Five has created a waiting list application for families that have NEVER applied for the Anderson Five Virtual Academy or have NEVER been placed on a prior waiting list. Families with documented medical conditions that make it unsafe to send their children to in-person school will receive special consideration on being accepted from the waiting list into the A5 Virtual Academy. Please note that adding your child's name to our waiting list and/or providing medical documentation does not guarantee the student a slot into the Virtual Academy. Students on the PRIOR A5VA waiting list will receive priority over students applying using this form.

It is important to realize that schools lost a significant number of staff to the virtual academy, and space in the schools is limited. Additionally, staffing for the virtual academy has been selected based on enrollment numbers, and for those reasons space in the A5VA is also limited. Adjusting scheduling and rosters for both the A5VA and in-person instruction  from this point forward is extremely difficult, and there is no guarantee that a child can or will be switched from one instructional model to another.

Thank you to the thousands of parents/guardians who participated in our surveys and played a critical role in our decision making process as we approach the 2020-2021 academic year.

In response to the evolving Coronavirus (COVID-19) health situation, and as we continue to prioritize student and staff health, safety and well-being: Anderson Five will operate on an In-Person Instructional Model AND Fully Virtual Instructional Model, concurrently for the 2020-2021 academic year. This means Anderson Five intends to move forward with its intentions to safely resume in-person instruction, while additionally offering an at-home K-12 virtual instruction program (Anderson Five Virtual Academy (A5VA).

Parents much choose ONE of the TWO models for their child(ren) for the 2020-2021 academic year. Please refer to the visual below for an explanation of each model.

Please note that in an effort to ensure that our learning environment is as safe as possible, the NEW start date for the upcoming school year is now September 8, 2020. BOTH the in-person instructional model and the fully virtual instructional model (A5VA) will begin on September 8, 2020. You may view a revised school calendar for the 2020-2021 academic year by clicking HERE.

In-Person Instructional Model

Anderson Five intends to begin the 2020-21 school year with in-person instruction and operations, with SCDHEC and CDC guidelines, protocols and procedures in place. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Implementation of Social Distancing guidelines to the fullest possible extent in a school setting.
  • Continuation of robust cleaning, disinfecting and sanitizing routines throughout the entire school day and on into after-hours at/on each Anderson Five school campus, facility, and school bus, with priority going to high-trafficked areas and frequently encountered surfaces.
  • All classrooms are stocked with gloves and hand sanitizer.
  • There will be no mass gatherings, no field trips, and no entry of nonessential visitors for all Anderson Five school campuses for the foreseeable future.
  • Cafeteria procedures will be implemented at the discretion of each individual school principal.
  • All Anderson Five teachers and school staff have been provided with personal protective equipment including masks and/or face shields.
  • As of July 31, 2020 the South Carolina State Department of Education has mandated that all individuals inside of a SC public school facility/building are required to wear a mask. This includes all students of all grade levels, all teachers, and all faculty and staff.
  • Additionally, the South Carolina State Department of Education has mandated that all students in all grade levels must wear a mask while on the school bus.

Middle and High school principals, in particular, continue to discuss additional ways to ensure student and staff health, safety and well-being. In the event of a Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, Anderson School District Five has response plans and protocols readily available to implement. You can learn more about these plans and protocols in detail on the A5 Restart FAQ. For in-person instruction students and staff, these response plans/protocols may lead to the transition to eLearning for periods of time on an as-needed basis. While eLearning was/is not designed for long-term use, the district has made modifications and improvements to its eLearning program in comparison to the eLearning students experienced in the Spring of 2020. It is our hope to limit any as-needed eLearning periods to no more than two weeks at a time – however, the future cannot be predicted.

For a complete outline of the aforementioned and additional explicit procedures for our students and district-wide staff participating in the in-person instructional model, please visit the ANDERSON FIVE RESTART WEBSITE and navigate accordingly. School-specific inquiries need to be redirected to your child(ren)’s school(s), directly.

Fully Virtual Model

While the goal of Anderson School District Five is to safely return to an in-person school setting in the Fall, more than twenty-seven hundred parents responded with overwhelming interest in an online, at-home virtual instruction option. In response to this feedback, Anderson School District Five is offering the Anderson Five Virtual Academy: a K-12 at-home instructional online program that is staffed entirely by certified educators in Anderson Five who will provide virtual instruction and support throughout the school day for students who choose to learn from home during the 2020-2021 academic school year. A5VA students in grades K-5 will utilize Edmentum’s Calvert Learning online service provider, and A5VA students in grades 6-12 will use Edmentum’s Courseware online service provider. A5VA students receiving Special Education/Self-Contained services will utilize Acellus online service provider.

Due to the nature of the 3K and 4K curriculum and the age of the Preschool-students, the Anderson Five Virtual Academy is NOT available for 3K or 4K students. Anderson Five Virtual Academy is COMPLETELY different than eLearning. A5VA students will have a daily instructional schedule, earn grades, and receive frequent teacher feedback from their certified Anderson Five teacher. *UPDATE (7/22/2020): Immediately effective due to a directive from Superintendent Wilson, Anderson Five will allow requests for semester-by-semester enrollment in the Anderson Five Virtual Academy for 2020-2021. Students enrolled in the Anderson Five Virtual Academy will have the opportunity to switch to in-person learning at their home school at the end of first semester which is February 3, 2021. Anderson Five will also consider new enrollment into the Anderson Five Virtual Academy from in-person learning at the end of the first semester on February 3, 2021. Parents will be asked to give notification of intent for second semester enrollment by December 4, 2020.

Parents should be aware that the Anderson Five Virtual Academy instructional platform, Calvert and Edmentum, is based on South Carolina standards, but they do not follow the same pacing guide and sequence as the courses in our schools.  Any switch from the Anderson Five Virtual Academy to in-person instruction, and vice versa, may lead to student learning gaps.

Students in grades K-12 who DO NOT wish to return to in-person instruction for the first semester of the 2020-2021 academic year may begin applying to enroll in the Anderson Five Virtual Academy now. If you are interested in this A5VA virtual school option, please visit the ANDERSON FIVE RESTART WEBSITE for additional specifics on the program. You can CLICK HERE to apply for the Anderson Five Virtual Academy.

*UPDATE (7/16/2020)In light of Governor McMaster's recommendation on Wednesday (7/15/2020) that school districts not reopen schools until after Labor Day, Anderson Five is extending the application deadline for the Anderson Five Virtual Academy. Applications for the Anderson Five Virtual Academy must be completed/submitted by 7:00 p.m. on JULY 28.

While we regret the current health situation our Nation is facing, student and staff well-being remain top priority in this school district. It is important to recognize and understand that despite reopening of school campuses, school will look and operate differently with the safety and health of students and staff at the forefront. Anderson Five remains confident in its preparedness to implement both the In-Person and Fully Virtual instructional models, and is fully committed to ensuring each and every child is provided with quality education and services.

Please check back periodically as we work to address additional inquiries in a concise, thorough manner.
