Anderson Five Superintendent Tom Wilson awarded, appointed by Governor Henry McMaster

Governor Henry McMaster awards Anderson Five Superintendent Tom Wilson the Order of the Palmetto
 
OCTOBER 2020 - On October 29, 2020, Anderson School District Five Superintendent Tom Wilson was bestowed the Order of the Palmetto from South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.
 
Established in 1971, the Order of the Palmetto is the highest civilian honor in the state of South Carolina and is given for extraordinary lifetime service and achievements of national or statewide significance. Since inception, around 3,400 South Carolinians have received the recognition.
 
Recognizing not only his overall dedication to the field of public education and incredible accomplishments since taking on the Anderson Five superintendency in 2013, Governor McMaster cited also Mr. Wilson's incredible leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. From establishing the Penny Sales Tax and piloting the state's first eLearning initiative, to collaborating with neighboring school districts to bring forth the Anderson Institute of Technology and launching the new Anderson Five Virtual Academy - Superintendent Wilson has seen the school district to great heights in academics, arts, and athletics. Wilson's love for and dedication to students, teachers, employees, community and school district is made evident in all that he has done in and for Anderson School District Five.
 
 
Mr. Wilson humbly accepted among family, friends and colleagues, crediting them for the "team effort" in which he feels this prestigious award represents. Said Superintendent Wilson, “I am humbled and shocked, and I want to thank our legislative delegation for nominating me for this honor,” he continued by stating “I am lucky to work with a great team in a great district, and our school board has set a great tone for Anderson Five since my arrival in 2013.” He elaborated, “I have worked in education for over 43 years, and it means a lot to me to be able to spend this part of my career back in my own school district, and I look forward to continuing to work for our students and staff here in Anderson.”
 
Anderson Five is fortunate to have Superintendent Tom Wilson's leadership, and he is most deserving of this great honor. Congratulations and thank you, Mr. Wilson!

Anderson Five Superintendent Tom Wilson appointed to Education Commission of the States by Governor Henry McMaster
 

NOVEMBER 2020 - Anderson School District Five Superintendent Tom Wilson has been appointed by Governor Henry McMaster to serve on the Education Commission of the States (ECS). As a Commissioner, Superintendent Wilson will represent South Carolina at the national level by providing insight as a practitioner, and by giving feedback and analysis on education policy initiatives.

 

The Education Commission of the States is a non-partisan entity which serves as a partner to policymakers in all 50 states by providing personalized support and helping education leaders come together and learn from one another. ECS focuses on providing support through credible research, timely and factual reporting, unbiased counsel, and collaboration among state leaders.

 

As a Commissioner, Superintendent Wilson will play an active role in facilitating two-way communication between South Carolina and the Education Commission of the States. His appointment recognizes him as a key figure in education policy whose leadership is critical for the ECS in identifying and sharing key state policy issues and proposed legislation; as well as for the state of South Carolina in pursuit of the state’s own education agendas.

 

Said Superintendent Wilson, “it is a great honor to be appointed for this role, and I look forward to collaborating with Senator Hembree and Representative Allison, along with Governor McMaster and the other Commissioners, on important education issues for our state and our country.”

 

Superintendent Wilson’s appointment by Governor McMaster began on November 4, 2020.
