    Art Day

glass   bee    ukie quilt    art   basket

    Thursday, May 31

Arts Day at Whitehall will be Thursday, May 31. Students will be visiting with a variety of artist who specialize in music, dance, visual arts, storytelling, and even a bit of science with “the art of bee keeping”. Thanks to our Whitehall PTO for providing funds for our Arts Day!

4th and 5th grades will be able to do some cartooning with Dave McDonald, the author of Hamster Sam: Odd-ventures in Space. He is a cartoonist specializing in graphic novels for middle grade students. Students can draw with Mr. McDonald by following along with his how-to-draw videos on Youtube: Kids Make Comics with Dave McDonald. Find out more about him on his website: http://www.davemcdonald.com//

All students will have the opportunity to hear Natalie Daise, a professional storyteller who was one of the stars on the television show, Gullah Gullah Island. Her stories will include the traditional Gullah tales from the coast of South Carolina. Learn more about her at her website: https://nataliedaise.com/

Scott Brady of Musical Innovations in Greenville will do lessons with 4th and 5th graders about ukuleles. He will be bringing instruments so students will be able to actually try playing themselves. More about Mr. Brady and Musical Innovations is at their website: https://www.musicalinnovations.biz/

We will also have stained glass artist, Stephanie Patterson. Ms. Patterson is a local artist who also paints. She will show her work and tell about the process of creating stained glass.

Betsey Matheny will be showing and telling about quilting. She creates art by turning a very practical craft—the making of a quilt—into an art form.

Patricia Torbert will be letting students try out some weaving. She is a basket maker and will tell about the craft of basketry.

Two members of the Electric City Shag Club, Michael and Mary Medlin, will be giving students lessons in shagging. Our own ESOL teacher, Marianne Norris, will tell students about the art of bee keeping.

Thanks again to our PTO for funding Arts Day and to Mr. Brady, Ms. Patterson, Ms. Matheny and Mr. and Mrs. Medlin for volunteering their time.
